Any traveller who has had the opportunity to view Lake Constance and its shoreline landscapes in a summer atmosphere will have been taken in by these sights. Wide-open horizons above the water alternate with graceful ascending and descending paths, lined with trees, between fields and with a view of a settlement in the distance.

The Lake Constance watercolours that Andreas Felger painted during four stays between 1994 and 1999 capture this atmosphere. With a light hand he puts different views on paper: a view through the reeds, sailboats on the lake, a village church between vines and again and again the pure triad of earth, water and sky in a mesh of vertical and horizontal composition lines.

Often these characteristic lines run along recognisable pictorial elements, for example an incidence of light on the water, the succession of fields and meadows or cloud formations. Elsewhere, they assert themselves independently of the pictorial objects and create a network of abstract colour fields that permeates the seascapes and landscapes. In these compositions, what is seen on site and what is given artistic form enter into an exciting and at the same time floating and flowing synthesis.
