Andreas Felger’s creative roots lie in textile design. In 1950, at the age of 15, he began his apprenticeship as a pattern designer at Pausa AG, a successful textile company in Mössingen, Swabia. The company director encouraged Felger’s artistic talent by giving him freelance commissions, which enabled him to study art in Munich from 1954 onwards.
Between 1959 and 1980, he rose to become one of the leading designers at Pausa AG. Over 1,000 fabrics, including the well-known ‘Afrikana’ and ‘Mexikana’ series, bear witness to his enormously versatile and innovative textile design work during those years.
At the same time, textile design also inspired Felger’s fine art, which he presented for the first time in 1974 in a solo exhibition of prints held on the premises of Pausa AG, a company with a keen interest in the arts. Numerous original fabric designs preserved on paper demonstrate that the masterful style, striking patterns and brilliant colour schemes of his commissioned textile works find parallels in the Woodcuts, Watercolours and Oil paintings, he created as independent works. The exhibition WERK.STOFF – THE TEXTILE IN ART (Mössingen 2015) vividly demonstrated how closely Andreas Felger’s pictorial world is interwoven with his textiles repertoire.
