Untitled is of no help – there is nothing to see that the title might suggest. Twenty-five oil paintings by Andreas Felger were created in 2013, all of them untitled. They are abstract, yet offer hints at possible interpretations. Reading the painting seems particularly apt in the case of a work whose expansive central area could be perceived as an open book. Within it are light patches and lines that can be linked to the gaps between the hatching at the edges of the picture, yet they are more open, more transparent, less constrained. Unlike the dense, strongly coloured outer structures, which become lighter and warmer from bottom to top and thus allow for associations with landscape (which are often present in Andreas Felger’s pictures), the double-page spread of the ‘book’ reveals aspects of the human world: number, time and fleeting signs. Are nature and spirit to be contrasted here, in as abstract a manner as possible? Although humans are only able to decipher the world to a limited extent.
The presentation of the work is part of the launch of the wider project MOVING CANVAS BERLIN, a multi-part pop-up exhibition series featuring oil paintings by Andreas Felger. Starting with several Placements of individual artworks in Pankow, vacant shop premises, shop windows and temporary spaces in various Berlin districts will be used as exhibition venues for a flexibel period of time, thereby responding to the availability of urban voids. In the long term, connections are intended to emerge between the locations: over time, MOVING CANVAS will develop into a coherent retrospective, offering glimpses of the artist’s life’s work in its multifaceted dimensions within the everyday life of the city.
