And yet his sculptures can be consistently derived from his two-dimensional work. Anyone viewing, for example, the old wooden print blocks in Felger’s archive today can sense, in the striking lines and ridges, the emergence of a spatial approach to the surface.

In the late 1970s, he produced his first vividly coloured wooden reliefs, in which pictorial composition still predominated, but the path towards a sculptural interpretation of the individual forms was already clearly evident.

Consequently, the sculptural forms break free from the wall and stand independently in space. Some of Felger’s sculptures retain a two-dimensional quality, even when placed in space: works such as Fleeing ones (2008), The reclining (2003) or Couple (2003) consist of clearly contoured metal plates rendered in monochrome hues. In his woodworks, by contrast, geometric forms and meaning merge into a floating unity. Even in his sculptures, despite the resistance of the material, Felger achieves the lightness and transcendence that characterise his watercolours.

His repertoire includes striking, sculptural stand-alone pieces as well as large-scale sculptural ensembles. Set amidst a listed textile industry site in Mössingen Pausa Sculpture (2015) represents an iconic spatial form and, at the same time, a local landmark, whilst 10 Commandments (2013) in the Bad Sebastiansweiler Sculpture Park embeds a group of ten hieratic shell lime stone stelae within the surrounding natural landscape.

In his three-dimensional work, the artist also reveals himself to be a collector. With a keen eye for surface textures, the qualities of materials and the inherent character of natural forms, he gathers found objects whilst out walking, travelling and in his everyday life, which often find their way into his art.

Continue …

No results found.

OEUVRE / SCULPTURE This page is still under construction.
